InfoAnytime - How to make P2P File Sharing Work
WARNING
We must be clear that any P2P software must not be used to breach any
Copyright or encourage others to do so - and any use of P2P software is at the
users own risk. Remember that potentially Everything you
download or share can be traced while you are on-line. If you don't want
an unexpected know at the door, then DON'T BREAK THE LAW!
Introduction
P2P File Sharing is a very popular hobby at present, and we are
frequently asked what software to use and how to make it work.
Many users have had bad experiences with programs such as Kazaa, Bearshare, Limewire, Morpheus and other varients of these programs which install Spyware when they are installed and proceed to make the computer unusable, even if the files downloaded are harmless.
If you are using or HAVE used ANY of the above programs, we STRONGLY recommend scanning your PC for Spyware (For Our information click Spyware Information)
Clean Spyware Free P2P Software
The only usable software we currently recommend and know to be free of
Spyware and Viruses are two Open-Source (i.e. FREE) packages called "Shareaza"
and "Ares".
These should NEVER be charged for and we suggest only using the links shown below to their authors official web-sites to avoid look-alike versions that have been modified, or want paying for.
Download Links:
Ares Galaxy -
http://sourceforge.net/projects/aresgalaxy/
- Be sure to use the Download Page
Shareaza - http://sourceforge.net/projects/shareaza/
- Be sure to use the Download Page
Of the two packages, Shareaza may have better content but is a little harder to configure and seems less reliable with some ISPs. Ares Galaxy does seem to work very well where other P2P software fails to download at any reasonable speed. If you're new to P2P or want an easy way in, try Ares Galaxy. If your more familiar with P2P software and configuring firewall ports, then by all means try Shareaza. If you don't get good download speed with Shareaza, the TRY ARES!
Installation:
Ares is quite simple to install - it configures itself on a random port
during installation, which will need enabling on your firewall or router.
We would suggest creating two folders, preferably on a large second hard disk, for Ares called "Ares Download" and "Ares Shared" and configuring these to be the ONLY folders that Ares shares, using the "General" page to configure the download folder and the "File Sharing" page to set the shared folders.
Router Configuration
If using a router, find the port number in the Ares Control Panel, on the
"Transfer" Page and note the IP address from the "Network" page that is shown in
brackets, if your IP address is shown as:
IP: 123.100.101.222 (192.168.0.1)
Then you need the 192.168.0.1 address. This address and port number should be configured in the "Port Forwarding" section of your routers configuration pages. The address is the "Inside Address" and access should be allowed from ANY external address.
Router configuration varies greatly between models and manufacturers. Please see your routers configuration information before making changes to the security settings, or ask an IT professional!
